Preventative Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime. Dr. Mark Milam can help you avoid expensive and complicated dental work by identifying and treating problems early. Dr. Mark Milam provides preventive services for the whole family: professional teeth cleaning, check-ups, exams, and cavity prevention with sealants and fluoride.

Exams & Cleanings

Professional Teeth Cleaning
Daily brushing and flossing is a great habit, but it is not enough to keep your mouth free of cavity-causing bacteria. You need regular, professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from hard to reach areas of your mouth. During your cleaning appointment, the hygienist will use special tools to remove bacteria and toxins from every tooth surface. After cleaning, your teeth will be polished to make it harder for bacteria to stick to the surface. Your dentist will take a final look and perform any difficult tartar removal.

Check-ups and Exams
During your visit, Dr. Mark Milam will check your mouth and gums for problems and take necessary X-rays. We use low-radiation digital X-rays for accurate evaluation. Early diagnosis is important because some dental problems do not show symptoms until the condition has progressed to an advanced stage. In general, you should visit the dentist twice a year for check-ups. The frequency may vary depending on your risk of developing cavities and gum disease. Regular preventative dentistry is among the first lines of defense for early detection of conditions that can worsen if left untreated.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is at the core of many oral health problems, and if left untreated, can ultimately lead to tooth rotting and decay, bleeding, sores, ulcers, abscesses, and even tooth death. There are different types of gum diseases that attack different parts of your tissue, and all of them can easily be prevented with regular visits to the dentist, proper brushing, flossing and rinsing, and general oral hygiene.

Family Dentistry

Like general dentistry, family dentistry requires extra training. It is similar to general dentistry, but it is suitable for patients of all ages. A family dentist may see three or four generations of family members, including adolescents and teens.

The job of a family dentist is to ensure the oral health of the entire family, as the name suggests. A family dentist usually undergoes 4 years of undergraduate schooling and at least 3 additional years of dentistry school with an emphasis on training that reflects a plan of care for entire family units.

Sedation Dentistry

If you are one of the many Americans who would rather grunt through the pain of a toothache than to visit a dentist’s office, you are not alone. Unfortunately, this phobia is very real to those who experience it, and it is a major contributing factor to patients deciding not to go to the dentist for any treatments.

If you experience this, then sedation dentistry may be right for you. We provide oral and nitrous oxide sedation dentistry to fully alleviate any pain and anxiety that you may be feeling during dental procedures. Our staff keep up to date on new technology to ensure that your sedation appointment is administered safely to help your smile be its best.
